The construction of the Grand Canal d'Alsace, completed in the 1950s, created the artificial Île du Rhin, approximately 45 kilometres long, between the canal and the Old Rhine; much of it is now designated as a nature reserve and is regarded as one of Europe’s largest renaturation sites. In this series, which is currently in progress, I explore this section of the Rhine in around 50 black-and-white photographs, both on the island and on the German and French sides, documenting nature, agriculture, industry, history and faith through the cycle of the seasons. The focus is on the idea of passage – of passing through and crossing over – in geographical, metaphorical and spiritual terms.
